text-decoration: none;\" target=\"_blank\"\u003EClick here if you would prefer to dual boot Linux Mint with Windows 8.1.\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003EIt may be tempting to jump in and skip the steps that show you how to back up your Windows files but I can't impress on you enough the importance of doing so. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ch2\u003EUpdate\u003C\/h2\u003EI have written a \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/linux.about.com\/od\/LinuxNewbieDesktopGuide\/ss\/The-Ultimate-Windows-81-And-Ubuntu-Dual-Boot-Guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\"\u003Enew guide for dual booting Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThere are a few differences to the instructions below using the new method which are mainly as follows:\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Col\u003E\u003Cli\u003EThe backup section advises only using \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/linux.about.com\/od\/LinuxNewbieDesktopGuide\/ss\/Create-A-Recovery-Drive-For-All-Versions-Of-Windows.htm\" target=\"_blank\"\u003EMacrium Reflect for creating system images\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EThe USB drive created uses a new \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/linux.about.com\/od\/howtos\/ss\/How-To-Create-A-UEFI-Bootable-Ubuntu-USB-Drive-Using-Windows.htm\" target=\"_blank\"\u003Emethod to create a UEFI bootable USB drive\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EInstead of using the \"something else\" option the new guide allows you to use the default install alongside Windows 8.1 option.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ol\u003EIn essence I have found the Windows recovery tools to be flaky with regards to restoring from a system image. (especially if you move the recovery image around). For instance if you create a recovery image on an external hard drive and then copy it to another external hard drive or NAS drive there is no guarantee that Windows 8.1 will recognise it. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI have used Macrium Reflect for creating system images and restoring them (even after moving images around) and it works. The software is free to use as well although there is a paid for version for extra options.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ECreating a UEFI bootable only Ubuntu USB drive ensures that Ubuntu is installed to a GPT partition. The Ubuntu installer therefore also recognises the existence of the Windows 8.1 partition. This enables you to choose the default option for installing alongside Windows 8.1\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EUsing this method it appears that there is no longer a requirement to turn off secure boot.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI still had to manually set the Windows bootloader using BCDEdit.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EFeel free to give the new guide a try or you can stick with the tried and trusted method below.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ch2\u003EA review of Ubuntu 14.04\u003C\/h2\u003EBefore\u0026nbsp;you start\u0026nbsp;it might be worth reading\u0026nbsp;the latest \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.everydaylinuxuser.com\/2014\/06\/ubuntu-1404-there-has-never-been-better.html\" target=\"_blank\"\u003Ereview of Ubuntu 14.04\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;to make sure dual booting with Windows 8.1 is something you want to do.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ch2\u003E1. Back up Windows\u003C\/h2\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003EThere are two steps to backing up Windows:\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Col\u003E\u003Cli\u003ECreate a recovery drive for backing up Windows 8.1\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ECreate a file history for backing up personal files\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ol\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003EFor the recovery drive you will need a\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/product\/B005FYNT3G\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8\u0026amp;camp=1634\u0026amp;creative=6738\u0026amp;creativeASIN=B005FYNT3G\u0026amp;linkCode=as2\u0026amp;tag=evelinuse-21\" target=\"_blank\"\u003E\u0026nbsp;USB flash drive with at least 16gb of space\u003C\/a\u003E. Insert the USB drive into your computer. You should make sure that you have no data that you need to keep on the drive as it will be wiped during this process. Some people say you don't need any at all, some go for 1.5 times the amount of RAM and some say 2x.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EUnless disk space is at a premium I would just go for the 2x and have done with it.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EIn theory if you are running lots of intensive processes such as video editing then the swap space is used to store memory that isn't currently being used (swapped) to disk. This is disk intensive and slows down your computer but it will help to prevent a crash. So at this point you can either take my word for it and stay in the live session or you can reboot and see if the installation has worked without any further steps required.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ch2\u003E7. Boot Repair\u003C\/h2\u003EI am going to assume that you chose to restart now and your computer booted straight into Windows without giving the option for Ubuntu.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ELog into Windows and click the power icon next to your username in the top right corner.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EHold down the shift key and select to restart your computer. Keep the shift key held down until your computer reboots.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAt the point of the UEFI settings appearing choose to boot from USB again.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EYou will now be booted back into the live session of Ubuntu.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EClick on the network icon in the top right corner and choose your network connection. You will probably need to enter the security key. This is just an informational message as far as I am concerned because it is perfectly fine to install Ubuntu with EFI turned on.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAfter clicking \"OK\" to the EFI detected message the utility performed a few tasks and then asked me to select some text and run it in a terminal window.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EIf you are asked to do this open a new terminal window (press the \"super\" key, enter \"term\" into the Dash and click on the icon that appears).\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ECopy the text from the boot repair window by selecting it with the mouse. Press CTRL and C and then right click in the terminal window and select paste.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EMake sure all the commands have run correctly. You may need to press return to get the last command to run.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ENow click on the \"Forward\" button within the boot repair application. You may be asked to copy and paste more text.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ERepeat the process of selecting all the text, press CTRL and C and then right click in the terminal window and select paste.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EMake sure the commands run.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EKeep following through on the process until the boot repair finishes.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EIf you are like me then at the very end of the process you will see a message stating that boot repair completed with errors.
